Discover Honda E-Clutch technology and compare the CB650R, CBR650R and 2026 NX500 E-Clutch models

Honda E-Clutch technology gives riders a fresh way to enjoy a manual motorcycle. You still select each gear with the foot lever, but the system can operate the clutch automatically when starting, stopping and changing gears.

That means smoother shifts, less work in traffic and no need to hold the clutch lever at every stop. Riders who prefer traditional control can still use the clutch lever whenever they choose.

For Australian riders, Honda E-Clutch is currently available across three distinctly different motorcycles: the CB650R E-Clutch, CBR650R E-Clutch and 2026 NX500 E-Clutch. Here is how the technology works and which model may suit your riding.

What is Honda E-Clutch?

Honda E-Clutch electronically controls the motorcycle's clutch while retaining a conventional six-speed gearbox and foot-operated gear lever.

With E-Clutch switched on, the rider can:

- Pull away without manually operating the clutch lever

- Change up or down using only the gear lever

- Come to a complete stop without pulling in the clutch

- Reduce the chance of stalling during normal operation

- Use the clutch lever manually whenever desired

The system coordinates clutch movement with fuel-injection and ignition control to make gear changes smooth and quick. It is not an automatic transmission: the rider still chooses when to change gear. It is also different from Honda's Dual Clutch Transmission, because the E-Clutch motorcycles retain the familiar layout and involvement of a conventional manual gearbox.

E-Clutch can be turned off when the motorcycle is stationary and in neutral, allowing the bike to be ridden like a traditional manual motorcycle.

Honda CB650R E-Clutch

The CB650R E-Clutch combines everyday versatility with Honda's distinctive Neo Sports Café styling. Its 649cc inline four-cylinder engine delivers smooth power, an engaging exhaust note and strong performance across city streets and winding roads.

Its upright riding position makes it the most natural all-round road bike in the E-Clutch range. The exposed engine, compact bodywork and modern lighting give it a muscular naked-bike appearance, while the five-inch colour TFT display and Honda RoadSync add useful connectivity.

**Best suited to:** Riders wanting a versatile naked motorcycle for commuting, weekend rides and everyday road use.

**Key highlights:**

- 649cc inline four-cylinder engine

- Relaxed, upright riding position

- Neo Sports Café styling

- Honda Selectable Torque Control

- ABS and Emergency Stop Signal

- Five-inch colour TFT display with Honda RoadSync

- E-Clutch convenience with full manual clutch control still available

Honda CBR650R E-Clutch

The CBR650R E-Clutch uses the same smooth 649cc inline four-cylinder engine but wraps it in full sportsbike bodywork inspired by Honda's Fireblade family.

It offers a sportier riding position and stronger wind protection than the CB650R, making it appealing to riders who want supersport looks without giving up real-world comfort and versatility. E-Clutch makes the CBR650R easier to live with in traffic while preserving the direct, involving feel of selecting every gear yourself.

**Best suited to:** Riders who want sportsbike styling, an exciting four-cylinder engine and practical performance for both weekday and weekend riding.

**Key highlights:**

- 649cc inline four-cylinder engine

- Full sports fairing with Fireblade-inspired styling

- Sport-focused riding position

- Honda Selectable Torque Control

- ABS and Emergency Stop Signal

- Five-inch colour TFT display with Honda RoadSync

- Smooth E-Clutch gear changes without losing manual control

2026 Honda NX500 E-Clutch

The 2026 NX500 brings E-Clutch technology into Honda's accessible adventure-touring range. Its 471cc parallel-twin engine is designed for usable everyday performance, while the upright riding position, wind protection and 17.5-litre fuel tank suit commuting, touring and weekend escapes.

The NX500 E-Clutch uses a 19-inch front wheel, 180mm of ground clearance and Showa inverted front suspension to provide confidence across rough roads and light unsealed-road riding. Its 830mm seat height also helps make it approachable for a broad range of riders.

For riders covering long distances or dealing with stop-start traffic before reaching the open road, E-Clutch reduces fatigue while keeping the control and familiarity of a manual gearbox.

**Best suited to:** Riders wanting an approachable adventure tourer for commuting, longer trips and exploring beyond smooth city roads.

**Key highlights:**

- 471cc parallel-twin engine

- Upright adventure-touring riding position

- 19-inch front wheel

- 180mm ground clearance

- 17.5-litre fuel tank

- Honda Selectable Torque Control

- Five-inch TFT display with Honda RoadSync

- E-Clutch variant available alongside the standard model

## Which Honda E-Clutch model should you choose?

Choose the **CB650R E-Clutch** if you want an agile, versatile naked bike with an upright riding position and the character of an inline-four engine.

Choose the **CBR650R E-Clutch** if you prefer full sportsbike styling, extra wind protection and a more performance-focused riding experience.

Choose the **2026 NX500 E-Clutch** if your riding includes commuting, touring, rougher roads or weekend adventure, and you value comfort, range and an upright riding position.

## Is Honda E-Clutch good for learner and returning riders?

E-Clutch can make low-speed riding, hill starts and stop-start traffic feel less demanding because the system manages clutch operation. This can help a rider concentrate on throttle control, road position and surroundings.

It can also appeal to experienced and returning riders who want less fatigue without moving to a fully automatic motorcycle. Because the clutch lever remains available, riders can continue using familiar manual techniques whenever they prefer.

Learner-approved status varies by model, variant, state and territory. Always confirm the exact motorcycle's current eligibility before purchasing.

## Does E-Clutch remove the fun of riding?

No. The rider still controls the throttle, chooses every gear and operates the gear lever. E-Clutch simply takes care of clutch operation when enabled. On a winding road, the system can make shifts fast and smooth; around town, it removes repeated clutch work in traffic.

If you want full manual control, use the clutch lever at any time or switch the system off while stopped in neutral.
